DESCRIPTION:

The Electrically Heated Rain and Snow Gauge Station - Model 3425 accurately measures rain and frozen precipitation. As precipitation is collected and melted in the Heated Rain and Snow Gauge Station's 12 inch (30.5 cm) funnel, water is directed to a tipping bucket mechanism adjusted to tip and dump when 1.0 mm of water is collected. With each tip of the Heated Rain and Snow Gauge Station's tipping bucket, a magnet passes over a sealed reed switch that causes a momentary contact closure. The contact closure is counted by the circuitry in the Heated Rain and Snow Gauge Station's ALERT/IFLOWS transmitter, and the accumulated value is transmitted to the base station.

Whether using the Electrically Heated Rain and Snow Gauge Station for watershed management, highway management, or one of the many other uses, it delivers accuracy with a one-piece machined aluminum tipping bucket and an insulated aluminum housing which holds a spun aluminum funnel. The Heated Rain and Snow Gauge Station include two separate heaters. A 500 watt blanket heater is attached to the bottom of the Heated Rain and Snow Gauge Station's collection funnel to melt the precipitation for measurement, and a 100 watt blanket heater is mounted under the top section base so the measured precipitation passes out of the gauge freely without freezing. Because of the high power requirement the Heated Rain and Snow Gauge Station should only be used where AC power is available.

The utilization of the dual, digitally controlled thermostats provide the Heated Rain and Snow Gauge Station with superior temperature control in and around the gauge. This improves the Heated Rain and Snow Gauge Station's snow measurement accuracy by reducing catch loss through the “thermal chimney affect” that is inherent in heated gauges. It also minimizes electricity use by the Heated Rain and Snow Gauge Station. This is in contrast to the older Bi-metal thermostats, which tend to overshoot the temperature set points.

For remote, hard to reach sites, an optional Radio Path Study can be made to analyze radio transmission paths, ensuring clean, accurate signals between various Electrically Heated Rain Gauge Station locations.

The Electrically Heated Rain and Snow Gauge Station - Model 3425 includes a weatherproof Standpipe Assembly, ALERT/IFLOWS Data Transmitter, Electrically Heated Rain Gauge Top Section, Antenna, and Antenna Mast & Cable.
