DESCRIPTION:

The In-pavement Surface Sensor - Model 5721-01 is designed as a low cost, in-road sensor unit for integration with other field devices in an ITS Network. Real-time anti-icing knowledge of the pavement surface temperature and surface state is necessary for making an informed decision on treatment. The In-pavement Surface Sensor monitors the actual road surface environment. The sensor can be used in many applications including; parking garage ramps, entryways, sidewalks, loading docks, ice-prone bridges, and normal and elevated roadways. The In-pavement Surface Sensors consist of our Passive Surface Sensor and an (optional) Sub-Surface Temperature Sensor and Signal Processing Modules, for detecting wet, frozen pavement conditions. The In-pavement Surface Sensors can also serve as a guide as to whether any de-icing chemical remains on the surface and if it is necessary to apply more.

A In-pavement Surface Sensor Station is provided with one or two dedicated In-pavement Surface Sensors. The first In-pavement Surface Sensor provides accurate surface temperature reading and measures surface wetness. In the single In-pavement Surface Sensor configuration (5721-01), the sensor may be deployed on the surface for determining surface temperature and surface conductivity (wetness), or as a sub-surface temperature sensor. In the two sensor configuration (5721-07), one In-pavement Surface Sensor is deployed embedded in the surface and the second is installed under the surface to provide sub-surface temperature.

The In-pavement Surface Sensor's processing unit consists of Signal Conditioning Modules packaged in a compact enclosure for convenient mounting within a roadside enclosure, traffic enclosure or other cabinet. Conditioned In-pavement Surface Sensor signals are read by a connected monitoring station, data logger, or one of our NTCIP compliant Road Weather Information System (RWIS) Remote Processing Units (RPU). In the case of use with a RPU, conditions are sampled with the In-pavement Surface Sensor and roadway status determined (Dry, Wet or IceWatch) by observing temperature and moisture phase change on the surface. The In-pavement Surface Sensor's surface temperature, surface wetness, sub-surface temperature and (where applicable) surface condition are made available via the telemetry system used at the station. While the surface wetness portion of the In-pavement Surface Sensor is measuring conductivity, the value is not provided in calibrated engineering units. The In-pavement Surface Sensor's value can serve as a guide as to whether de-icing chemicals remain on the surface or if re-application is necessary.

The In-pavement Surface Sensor element, Model 5721-51 is molded in a resilient epoxy compound with thermal properties that closely match the roadway surface. The In-pavement Surface Sensor works on thermally passive principles; no artificial heating or cooling is used that may alter the measured environment. The In-pavement Surface Sensor's maintenance-free design features corrosive-resistant electrodes to derive the presence of moisture on the roadway surface. The In-pavement Surface Sensors are intentionally designed as low cost units, so replacement is economical if and when required due to road surface milling, re-paving, etc.
